Match Reports – Saturday 8th March 2025

Women’s 4s  2 – 3  Old Kingstonian 1s

Old Cranleighan’s women’s 4’s faced Old Kingstonian’s in an exciting and hard-fought match. The first half saw OC’s take the lead with a brilliant goal from Amy, who received a fantastic pass into the D and finished well. OKs quickly responded with an equaliser, but overall, the opposition struggled to break through OC’s solid defence, with strong tackles and key interceptions preventing many attacks. During this half, Eva was unfortunately injured but showed incredible resilience by continuing to play through the pain. The half ended 1-1 after a lot of end-to-end play, with OC’s creating plenty of chances but unable to convert. In the second half, OKs came out stronger, making more aggressive tackles and putting pressure on OC’s. Despite OC’s maintaining the majority of possession and passing the ball well, they were unlucky to concede twice. However, OC’s kept fighting, and Manny scored a superb straight strike from the left into the corner, bringing the score to 3-2. The team continued to press for an equaliser, but despite their best efforts, the match ended in a 3-2 defeat. Player of the Match was awarded to Sophie Young for her excellent interceptions, tackling, and driving runs up the line.

Men’s 1s  1 – 0  Wimbledon 2s

On a crisp afternoon at The Fortress, Old Cranleighans, following a solid 3-3 draw last week, took on Wimbledon 2s in what proved to be a gritty, hard-fought encounter.

The game started in cagey fashion, with both teams struggling to find an early breakthrough. OC’s had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the first quarter after being awarded a penalty flick, but the Wimbledon keeper produced a fine save to keep the score level.

Wimbledon’s attempts to break through were limited, though they did have a particularly adventurous centre-back who bore an uncanny resemblance to a young blonde-haired Donald Trump and frequently carried the ball forward. One such run saw him enter the OC’s circle, but thankfully, Lukas was on hand to keep his election campaign—sorry, goal attempt—firmly out of the net.

As the game wore on, OC’s defensive resilience shone through, especially in their short-corner defence, which remained rock solid throughout the match. The teams went into halftime at 0-0, with OC’s confident they could find the breakthrough.

A notable moment came in the third quarter when a search warrant was reportedly issued for a man who looked suspiciously like Joe Roberts but with far better chat. The authorities are still investigating, but the alleged offence committed on the field remains classified.

Finally, deep into the game, OC’s broke the deadlock with a brilliantly executed short-corner routine. A slick spin move from “our overworked partner’s typewriter” (aka Ali Clift) found its way to the ever-reliable Miguel, who made no mistake in burying the winner—his fourth goal in just two games.

A well-deserved win for OC’s, another clean sheet for Lukas, and a performance that keeps The Fortress standing strong! With three games remaining in a tight league, every point now carries even greater significance. Onto the next game- Derby Day fixture this Friday night against Surbiton boshhhhh.

Hamstrings  4 – 0 Sunbury & Walton Hawks

Having started our pre-match routine on Wednesday with Eastie’s old school team sheet, we knew that this was going to be a good day out for the Hammies. We were spurred on further with the dulcet tunes of Finnigan in the bar. Who knew he played for the opposition (Sunbury & Walton)? What more motivation did we need.
Nerves were calmed as DOD was awarded to Manmeet for failing to show: something to do with the Luftwaffe.
Our warm up was helped by the balmy spring afternoon and a good helping of deep heat.
OCs started strongly. Taking control of the midfield and quietening former OC ‘Wrighty’. Some decent passing resulted on a short corner early on. One nil the outcome with Richie walking the ball into the back of the net. OCs continued to dominate, the back 4 working well to keep the forwards quiet. Midfield just annoyed Wrighty – result! Gerry, was dominant up front with Poen dancing. Another short corner for OCs 2 – nil the outcome and Gerry onto the score sheet. Great strike! OCs rallied and bossed the game.
Half time came and went. OCs continued to deliver good ball to the forwards who kept the short corners coming. First corner of the second half, and Closey enjoyed questioning if Finnegan would be kind enough to get the ball from the back of the goal! 3 – 0 . We continued to hammer Hawks and then it happened. Matt scored his goal for the season. To be fair, it was a decent goal, but not as good as his celebration. 4 – 0. Job done. Off to OK’s next week.

Women’s 6s  1 – 0  Teddington

The first challenge of the day was battling the traffic to get to the pitch, but once the team had all arrived, following a motivated warm up, the ladies 6s were raring to take on Teddington on this sunny afternoon in march. Teddington came out hard putting our defence under pressure, and forcing us to successfully defend a penalty corner. We soon found our stride, amd returned the pressure winning a penalty corner and only just missing the target. We kept the pressure on and following a baseline drive by Darcie and hit across the goal, wonderfully finished by Briony to gave us the 1-0 lead at half time. The second half was fairly even and the spring heat energy sapping. We had the opportunity to double our lead with a penalty corner but couldn’t quite convert, but held on for the rest of the match to secure the 1-0 win! Congrats Carolina for being nominated POM!

Ladies 5s 1 – 1 Barnes Stormers

It was another rare sunny Saturday as OC took on Barnes in a closely contested match. OC fought hard and looked strong unfortunately the goal remained elusive and it was Barnes that   struck first, taking the lead with a well-executed goal to go 1-0 up.

The second half saw OC come out with renewed energy, pressing high and searching for an equaliser. Their persistence paid off when Chloe Higgins confounded the keeper with a cheeky trickle over the back line, leveling the score at 1-1.

With momentum on their side, OC pushed hard for a winner, creating multiple chances, but Barnes held firm in defense, denying them the decisive goal. Despite their efforts, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Player of the Match went to Chloe Higgins, for her crucial equaliser and tireless performance throughout the game.
