Reigate Priory 0-7 3rd XI
Reigate are never an easy side to beat but this game was done and dusted within 25 minutes thanks to six goals, including a hat-trick from David Knapp, in a remarkable 20-minute spell during which we played our best hockey of the season – special mention to Neil Grimes who bossed the midfield with great authority. Reigate bolstered their back line at half-time and looked a much stronger side as a result, the only score of the second half a remarkable solo effort from Charlie Packham which had echoes of John Barnes’ goal at the Maracana in 1984. The Reigate keeper, who made some excellent saves, is worth a mention as well, as are out own Dick of the Days, Mikey and Ollie, who arrived shortly before the start after somehow going to the wrong town, the wrong school and thinking we were playing a completely different opposition! The only downside was that Knapp tore a calf and may be out for up to three weeks. After a long break we set the pace in the league as we return to our unbeaten fortress on saturday to entertain Purley. Still too early to be talking about “The Treble” but we can be proud of our first league performance in 2017.
